Making candles is a great way to have your own unique home fragrance. Making them yourself saves money, and you can create the exact scent that you want! This blog post will give step-by-step instructions on how to make candles at home.
Start by gathering the required materials. You will need:
- a pot and stove to boil water in (or you can use an electric kettle) - wax flakes or chips - beeswax, soy wax, paraffin, etc. Make sure it's 100% pure; no additives! We recommend buying online for the best prices and selection. - wicks that match your candle size (you'll typically want one per ounce of wax used). Wicks come flat but should be easy to curl into shape with pliers if needed. Get them wick dipper. - dye chips/powders (various colors available) - fragrances - essential oils are great because they smell beautiful while also being gentle in the environment. - containers for your candles (jars, tins, or mugs work well)
We typically use soy wax flakes because they are more affordable than other options and have a decent burn time. Soy wax is also environmentally friendly since it's made from plants! If you're interested in beeswax though, that burns longer but costs more money. Paraffin has a very little scent so we don't recommend using it to make fragranced candles unless you want no smell at all...which can be nice too if you just like how the candle looks with an unscented flame. Beeswax varies widely in color depending on how much pollen was collected by worker bees - some batches will look yellow in color while others are whiter. Start by finding a well-ventilated area to work in since you'll be melting wax overheating. Create a double boiler with your pot and smaller metal bowl or measuring cup resting inside - that way the bottom of the container never touches the water below which can cause cracking if it's too hot. Bring some water to boil then reduce heat so that it is just simmering (not boiling).
It should gently bubble but not produce any big bubbles! Place about an ounce of wax flakes into your top layer, stirring occasionally until they're all melted down and smooth looking like this:
You want them to look transparent and shiny when finished so there aren't white spots left unmelted from how hard it was to dissolve them. If they're not 100% melted after a couple of minutes you can turn the heat back up slightly until they are, but keep an eye on how much is melting at once so it doesn't boil over or bubble too quickly - this makes your wax unscented which smells terrible!
Now add about 20 drops of color and 15-20 drops of fragrance oil (depending on how strong you want it) for every ounce of melted wax remaining in your container. This will vary depending on how big/small your batch is - just experiment with small batches first before making more candles if needed! Stir thoroughly then pour into containers that have already been linked with wicks. You can also use muffin tins instead since mason jars can be difficult to remove later without spilling wax. We like how this batch turned out! It has a lovely pink color with hints of orange and smells great too (like floral jasmine). If you want more fragrance oil in your candle just add drops one at a time until the desired scent is achieved. Optional (If you want to add). The longer they sit the stronger the smell will be since the molecules travel up into the air that way - so if yours aren't super fragrant after burning for an hour or two give them some time! Once they're ready to light it up and enjoy :) And voila...you've made your own beautiful candles from scratch! You could also try using beeswax if you want to make candles that smell how they're supposed to, but we find soy wax is a bit easier and more affordable to work with overall since it doesn't cost as much or require special equipment (like an actual candle making kit). We use the melting pot above for our double boiler because we can melt larger batches at once - this saves time! - saltpeter/potassium nitrate which helps your wicks stay straight so they don't burn unevenly later. This should be available at most grocery stores in the spice section usually near other ingredients used for pickling foods. - color chips/powders It's best to add these to your wax while it's still in the melting pot so they can dissolve faster. They will add a nice tint/sheen and deepen how fragrant your candles smell later on!
- beeswax pastilles (these are great for making candles that actually smell like what you want) - candle dye chips/powders You could also try using tea instead of water, but we find plain old tap water works just as well. Just make sure not to get any soap or other scents mixed into the mixture since this may alter how the colors turn out when finished! Make sure to stir thoroughly until all color is dissolved before pouring candles or else spots won't look uniform :) If you don't want too many bubbles on the surface of your candles you can use a straw to blow them off (but we like how rustic they look with bubbles so it's up to you!).
Once you're done making your candles they will need to chill for at least an hour or two before use. You can move them around occasionally if needed so they cool evenly instead of staying in one spot the whole time. Once completely cooled, trim wicks down to about half an inch, and enjoy!
